Sarphatipark:
Samuel Sarphati (1813-1866) was an Amsterdam doctor and pharmacist with a large number of patients from banking circles. He did a great deal to improve the city. For example, he drew up plans to extend the city around the Frederiksplein and outside the Singelgracht, for which he established the Nederlandse Bouwmaatschappij in 1864. A number of buildings were built on his initiative; the Amstel Hotel (1866) was one of them (source: Stadsatlas Amsterdam).
